A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
